No, this post isn’t about being eco-friendly, instead it’s about grass skirts! How much fun are grass skirts? The funny thing is, for most of us grass skirts are just costumes for Luau theme days or for Halloween. In reality, there are countries and tropical islands across the world that wear grass skirts as part of their traditional attire and sometimes just for the tourists. According to Dictionary.com grass skirt means “a skirt made of long blades of grass.” Of course the grass skirts we see here in the U.S. are made of fake grass, but look is still really natural.

You can see from the picture that grass skirts aren’t just the typical green and brown that we usually see. In fact, they are made in pink, red, and yellow! That’s a start on giving a twist to the traditional look. But let’s take it a little farther.

A Twist on Grass Skirts

I think it would be neat to see a shorter skirt made of blue jean and a belt covered in the grass skirt. Or how about a skirt trimmed in the fake grass. Of course I think the grass that is used needs to be made of something softer than what is used now. Have you ever worn one? They aren’t the most comfortable kind of skirts. I think I could change that by designing a new type of grass skirt, and bring the tropical look and feel of grass skirts to everyday fashion here in the U.S.

This post will be a little bit different, because the style I found is not on a person, it’s actually on a doll. This doll was handcrafted by a well-known traditional Korean doll artist. The outfit the doll is wearing represents traditional Korean clothing from the Chosun Dynasty period.

First off, the reason I chose this photo and style to write about is because I love the pleasant colors. The blue and white are very calming. I also like the “apron.” That’s something different from what you would typically see in America fashion. But I think a similar look can be created to pull from this traditional style from Korea into American trends.

Creating this look for American fashion

For example, if we shortened the skirt, and made it more fitted to the body, but keep the apron. I would tailor the apron a bit so it doesn’t look “poofy” against the slender look of the skirt, but I think it is a style that would defintitely stand out and be noticed. How fun would it be to get compliments on your skirt and be able to say it was inspired by traditional Korean clothing?
